I came across the work of Sophie Moran over Instagram and I was immediately drawn to her beautiful ceramic handmade tableware and household pieces. So captivated, I made a request and was super grateful when I got to meet the maker behind the creation and have the opportunity to feature her work here.
Sophie has been in the ceramic making business for 20 years which is telling in her quality and distinctive craftsmanship. In a nondescript warehouse in Melbourne, Sophie creates, designs and makes all her pieces herself. It was brilliant to see it in action and as her site confirms, every piece is hand formed, decorated, glazed and fired by her in an electric kiln.
You can check out more of Sophie’s collection and where her pieces are stocked at sophiemoran.info. And if you are interested in trying or developing the craft yourself, you’ll be happy to know that Sophie also runs classes as a tutor in beginner and intermediate wheel thrown ceramics with Mercator Ceramic School at the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne.
It’s a satisfying thing to be able to create and design your own beautiful pieces for your home. Hopefully, you are inspired to get out there and try something new yourself, but if not, then to support your local artist in their craft.
Till next time ?
